Carpet and Underfloor Heating

Contrary to popular belief, you can enjoy the benefits of underfloor heating with the pleasure of fitted carpet. In fact, they can be a wonderful partnership.

But there are some things you need to bear in mind when making your choices.

So, this month we share what you need to know…

It’s all about togs – the key to a successful marriage between carpet and underfloor heating is the tog rating. Usually, the maximum recommended rating is 2.5 tog, but please do check with the heating provider.

Underlay – aside from creating a cushion between the carpet and the floor, underlay is designed to provide insulation. Insulation has a tog rating and this will need to be combined with the carpet rating to ensure it doesn’t exceed the maximum recommended.

On projects where underfloor heating has been installed we prefer to use 8mm underlay where possible, as we find this gives the best foundation for our carpets. That particular underlay has a tog rating of 1, which means the carpet needs to be 1.5 Tog or less. If you choose a higher tog rating, we recommend a thinner underlay which has a lower rating.

Carpet choice – we have a large selection of carpets for you to choose from. The tog rating is specified on each range, to support your choice. All of our carpets are suitable for underfloor heating, but there are some specific ranges that really lend themselves to that environment. They include:

  • Maribella – our newest range is perfect for underfloor heating with a gorgeous thick luxurious feel, and yet a tog rating of just 0.9
  • Vermont – another velvet pile carpet with a tog rating of 1.15
  • Our Natural Collection – with the exception of Rathlin and Carisbrooke, all of the carpets in our Natural Collection have a tog rating of 1.20 or lower

Of course, our rugs would also be an ideal solution if you wish to make a statement.

Refer to range guides – all of our ranges have the technical specifications on our website, including the tog rating. Please refer to our website to help you in making the right choice for your project.
