Red wine on the rug? Don’t panic!
As we get closer to the festive season, many of us are getting ready to welcome friends, family, excitable children – and the odd over-enthusiastic pet – into our homes.
It’s also the time of year when more drinks are poured, more gravy is served and, inevitably, more of it ends up on the floor.
When a spill happens on a beautiful carpet, most people do exactly the wrong thing: they panic, grab the nearest cleaner and scrub frantically.
Unfortunately, that’s the fastest way to damage the pile and sometimes to “set” the stain rather than remove it.
So we’re sharing some calm, simple guidance on what to do – and what to avoid – when there’s an accident on the carpet.
First rule: Don’t panic (and definitely don’t scrub)
When a glass of red wine or a plate of pudding hits the floor:
- Take a breath. Stains are always easier to tackle if you stay calm and act methodically.
- Avoid rubbing or scrubbing. This roughens the fibres and can spread the stain.
- Be wary of “all-purpose” cleaners. The wrong product can lock the stain into the fibre, cause colour bleed, or leave a sticky residue that attracts fresh dirt.
Your simple stain action plan:
Whatever the spill, these basics are a good starting point for most carpets:
- Act quickly
The longer a spill sits, the more likely it is to become permanent. Tackle it as soon as you notice it. - Remove solids first
Gently scrape up any solids (food, candle wax, etc.) with a spoon or the back of a knife. Don’t push them further into the pile. - Blot, don’t rub
Use plain white kitchen roll or a clean white cloth. Coloured cloths or printed paper can transfer dye onto the carpet.
Press down firmly to blot up as much liquid as possible, then move to a fresh piece of cloth and repeat. - Use water to dilute the stain
Lightly dampen a white cloth with cool water and dab from the outside of the stain inwards. This helps stop it spreading. Avoid soaking the carpet – too much water can cause the stain to wick back up later or affect the backing. - Only then think about a cleaning product
If water alone isn’t enough, check the cleaning guide for the specific carpet range and use a recommended or WoolSafe-approved product. Test on an inconspicuous area first.
Avoid washing-up liquid, general household cleaners and anything containing bleach unless the care guide specifically allows it. - Let it dry, then vacuum
Once you’ve finished treating the area, blot out as much moisture as possible, allow the carpet to dry fully, and only then vacuum. Try not to walk on the area until it’s dry.
Different fibres, similar approach
Each Sandringham range comes with its own cleaning guide, because different fibres behave differently:
- Wool carpets need gentle, neutral products and careful drying. They do not respond well to bleach or strong alkaline cleaners.
- Premium nylon offers excellent stain resistance, but you should still treat spills promptly and follow the recommended method for that range.
- Polypropylene is often highly stain resistant and some qualities can be cleaned with more robust solutions – but only if the guide explicitly says so.
The overall principles are very similar – act quickly, blot, use white cloths, dilute with water – but the details of which cleaning agents are safe depend on the carpet.
If in doubt, refer to the cleaning guide for that specific range before using any product.
Consider stain protection
Many of our carpets can be supplied with a stain protection treatment which creates a near-invisible shield over the fibres. It helps spills sit on the surface for longer, making them easier to remove – particularly useful in dining rooms, family spaces and rental properties.
It won’t make a carpet completely stain-proof, but it can provide an extra layer of reassurance, especially at this time of year.
