Troubleshooting Carpet Challenges

Because we have built a reputation for being carpet experts, which is hardly surprising since we have been doing it for 19 years, we are sometimes asked to help troubleshooting carpet challenges.

Here are a couple of quite common issues:

Why is there a dark line where the carpet meets the skirting board?

These lines are caused by air moving through wall cavities, gaps in floorboards and gaps under skirting boards. The air passes through the carpet fibres and dust particles adhere to the fibres creating the dark dust lines.

The best way to resolve this is to ensure floorboards are fitted securely and skirting boards are fitted snuggly against the floors. We also recommend sealing the joint between the floor and the skirting board, which is something our installation team always do before fitting carpets.

How do I stop carpet rucking in home office environments?

Now that more of us have made the move to working from home, a purpose home office has become very popular.

Whilst we would be the first to encourage carpet in any environment, it is not necessarily the right flooring solution for an office. The constant wheeling of an office chair, and the natural movement of feet in a confined space does put excessive wear on carpet.

If your client is particularly keen on having carpet we recommend:

  • Choose a hard wearing carpet – our Natural Collection is a good choice
  • The carpet should be installed using a fully adhered underlay system
  • Use mats underneath office chairs to reduce castor wheel wear – see image below as an example
